Clearing is one UK-wide system with one set of vacancies. But if you sat Highers, you enter it on a different day from almost everyone else in Britain, and that single fact changes how you should play it.

Most Clearing advice online is written for someone opening A-level results on 13 August. You got yours on 4 August. Nine days is a long time in Clearing.

The 2026 dates that matter

Difference one: you are early, and that cuts both ways

On the morning of 4 August, Scottish applicants are the main group calling universities. The phone lines are less jammed than they will be on 13 August, and advisers have time to talk. If you know what you want, that morning is your best window of the whole summer.

The catch is on the other side of the ledger. Universities across the UK still have thousands of conditional firm places tied up in students who will not get their results for another nine days. A course that looks full on 4 August can open up on 13 or 14 August when English applicants miss their conditions. Vacancy lists keep moving until roughly mid-September.

So do not treat 4 August as your only shot, and do not accept something you will resent because the list looked thin that morning. Keep checking.

Difference two: the release trap

This is the one that catches Scottish applicants every year.

If you hold an unconditional firm place and you have changed your mind, you can use the “decline my place” button in your application from 2 July. Straightforward.

If your firm choice is still conditional and pending, because the university has not made a decision yet, that button is not your route. You have to phone UCAS and ask to be released into Clearing, and UCAS only takes those calls from 13:00 on Thursday 13 August until 2 September. In other words, a Scottish applicant sitting in limbo on 5 August cannot force the issue for over a week. Releasing yourself also loses both your firm and your insurance, so it is a one-way door.

The practical answer is to phone the university itself, but only in the first few days after Scottish results. If they are still considering you, they will say so. Then a door closes that catches Scottish applicants every year. Ahead of A-level results day, UCAS runs a results embargo: applications stop updating, and universities and colleges are not permitted to discuss an individual applicant’s status, with you or with your school. So for most of the stretch between Scottish results day and A-level results day, phoning does not work, and a screen that has not changed tells you nothing at all. Check the exact embargo window in UCAS’s confirmation and clearing key dates for the current year, because it moves with the results dates. Make your calls before it starts. Many will accept a near miss, or offer you a related course, and that decision appears in your application within about 24 hours.

Difference three: which results UCAS gets automatically

UCAS receives Highers, Advanced Highers, HNCs and HNDs from Qualifications Scotland and passes them to your choices. You do not need to post anything.

National 5s are the exception. UCAS says it receives some, but not all, National 5 results. If an offer had a National 5 condition attached, such as a specific grade in Maths or English, check your application status and be ready to send that evidence to the university yourself.

Difference four: college is a real route here, not a consolation

In Scotland there is a funded, structured path from college into a degree. The Scottish Funding Council calls it articulation, and it means entering second year of a degree with an HNC, or third year with an HND, from a Scottish college. Colleges and universities build these routes deliberately.

That is not how it works for a student in Manchester who misses their offer. It is worth knowing on 4 August, because a year at college on a linked HNC can put you in the same graduating year as the people who got in first time. Check the specific university’s articulation agreements rather than assuming, since the credit you carry depends on the pairing.

How to actually work Clearing

• Use the UCAS search tool. It is the only official vacancy list and universities update it directly. A course on some other site may have gone hours ago.
• Look at “My matches” in your application if you are unplaced. UCAS matches you to courses based on your application, and you can flag interest so universities can ring you.
• Find your Clearing number and your Personal ID before you phone anyone. Both are in your application.
• Phone the university and get informal offers from several. Nothing is binding until you add a Clearing choice.
• Only add a Clearing choice once a university has told you to. Adding it counts as accepting, and you can only hold one at a time.
• Do not wait for the university to reply. Once your choice is added, they confirm it in your application. There is no separate acceptance step.

If you never applied at all

You can still get in. Register and make a UCAS application now, and it goes straight into Clearing because the 30 June cut-off has passed. You will get a welcome email with your Clearing number, and for the 2026 cycle you can upload supporting documents through UCAS. You can only add a choice after your application is submitted.

One exception: conservatoires do not use Clearing. If music or drama at a conservatoire is what you want, contact them directly to see if they are still taking applications.

Questions people actually ask

Can I swap my firm and insurance choices now I have my results?

No. UCAS is clear about this. If you have been placed at your insurance and you would rather go to a different university, you decline your place and go through Clearing. Check that your preferred university can take you in Clearing before you decline anything.

I did better than expected. Can I use Clearing to trade up?

Yes, you can explore Clearing even with a confirmed place, but declining your place gives it up. Get a firm verbal offer from the new university before you touch that button.

Should I appeal my grade instead of doing Clearing?

Do both. A priority appeal can be submitted by you until 11 August, and decisions go out on 31 August, which is after most Clearing places are gone. Read our guide to SQA appeals for the rules, including the fact that a grade can go down.

When does Clearing definitely close?

19 October 2026 is the last date to add a Clearing choice, and 21 October is the last date for a university to make a decision. In practice most courses have filled long before that.

Who can I talk to who is not a university trying to recruit me?

Skills Development Scotland runs the results helpline on 0808 100 8000. In 2026 it ran from 4 to 7 August, 8am to 8pm on the Tuesday and Wednesday and 9am to 5pm on the Thursday and Friday. Their advisers cover college, apprenticeships and work, not just degrees.
