Your results are in, the grades are short, and the UCAS Hub is saying something you did not want to read. Before anything else: this is survivable, and thousands of Scottish students go through it every August. What matters now is the order you do things in, because several of your options have hard deadlines and one of them closes in a week.

Step one: find out what your application actually says

The UCAS Hub opens at 09:00 on Scottish results day. Missing a condition does not automatically mean you have lost the place. There are four realistic states you could be in.

What you see	What it means
Place confirmed at your firm choice	They accepted you anyway. It happens with near misses. Stop worrying.
Placed at your insurance choice	You did not meet your firm conditions, and your insurance took you.
Still conditional or pending	Nobody has decided yet. You are not rejected.
You are in Clearing	Both choices are gone. Clearing choices can be added from 10:00 on results day.

Applications can take up to 24 hours to update, so a blank screen at 9:05am is not a verdict.

Step two: phone the university, and do it in the first few days. Yes, you.

If you narrowly missed, UCAS is direct about this: contact the university, because they may be willing to accept you with lower grades, or offer a place on a different course. Their decision then shows up in your application with instructions.

Do it yourself, not through a parent. Admissions teams talk to the applicant. Have your Personal ID open, know which condition you missed and by how much, and be ready to say in one sentence why you still want the course. If the answer is no, ask whether there is a related course at the same institution with space, or whether they would consider you for a foundation or first year entry route.

One thing worth knowing about Scotland’s timetable: on 4 August most admissions teams are dealing mainly with Scottish applicants, because A-level results do not arrive until 13 August. You have their attention in a way you will not have in ten days’ time.

Step three: decide about a priority appeal, fast

If the grade looks wrong rather than just disappointing, the appeals service can prioritise your case because you have a conditional offer that depends on it. In 2026 the last day for you or a parent to request a priority appeal was 11 August, and your school had until 20 August. Priority decisions went out on 31 August, and where the applicant applied through UCAS, Qualifications Scotland sends any changed grade to UCAS directly.

Whatever you decide, do not sit and wait for the appeal outcome. Run it alongside everything else.

Step four: understand what you can and cannot change

Some rules trip people up every single year.

• You cannot swap firm and insurance. If you would now rather go to your insurance choice, that only happens through Clearing, and only if they can take you.
• Declining your place is one way. The “decline my place” button in your application releases you into Clearing and you lose the place. Get a verbal offer somewhere else first.
• If your firm is still pending, you cannot self-release straight away. There is a better route than most guides mention, and it is the one to try first. If your firm choice has not yet decided, you can contact the university and ask them to make you unsuccessful. They will usually do it. The advantage is large: your insurance choice stays alive and is considered straight away, whereas self-releasing through UCAS destroys both choices at once and drops you into Clearing with nothing held. Only if the university will not act do you fall back on self-release, which means phoning UCAS. In 2026 they took those calls from 13:00 on 13 August to 2 September. One more thing about phoning. Ahead of A-level results day, UCAS runs a results embargo during which applications stop updating and universities are not permitted to discuss an applicant’s status with you or your school. For much of the gap between Scottish results day and A-level results day, nobody can tell you anything. Check the current year’s embargo window in UCAS’s confirmation and clearing key dates, and make your calls before it starts. That is a nine day wait for a Scottish applicant. It also loses both your firm and your insurance.
• 2 September is the wall. That was the 2026 date by which remaining offer conditions had to be met, and the last day the decline button worked.

Step five: check whether it is a paperwork problem

UCAS receives Highers, Advanced Highers, HNCs and HNDs from Qualifications Scotland automatically and passes them on. National 5s are different. UCAS says it gets some but not all National 5 results.

So if your offer had a National 5 condition, say a National 5 Maths at B, and your application is stuck as conditional, the university may simply not have the evidence. Send it to them yourself. Same if you listed a qualification on your application that you never actually sat: tell the university, because they may be sitting waiting for a result that will never arrive.

Step six: look at the routes that only exist in Scotland

This is where Scottish advice stops matching English advice.

The Scottish Funding Council funds and monitors articulation: entering the second year of a degree with an HNC from a college, or the third year with an HND. Colleges and universities build these routes deliberately, and the SFC’s stated aim is that the student loses no time doing it.

What that means on a bad August morning is that a year at your local college can put you into the same degree, in the same graduating year as your classmates, without a single Higher resit. Whether you get full credit depends on the specific college and university pairing, so check the university’s articulation agreements for that exact HNC or HND rather than assuming.

• Skills Development Scotland results helpline, 0808 100 8000. In 2026 it ran 4 to 7 August: 8am to 8pm on the Tuesday and Wednesday, 9am to 5pm on the Thursday and Friday. Advisers cover college, university, apprenticeships, jobs and volunteering.
• SDS general line, 0800 917 8000, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, for before results day or after the helpline closes.
• UCAS, 0371 468 0468, for anything about your application itself.
• Qualifications Scotland, 0345 279 1000, for certificates and appeals.
• Your school or college guidance staff. They can approve a priority appeal and tell you your marks and band.

And the money

If your course, your institution or your start date changes, tell the Student Awards Agency for Scotland straight away. A SAAS application covers one academic year and you reapply each year, so a change now affects the application you have already made. Questions

I got into my insurance but I do not want it. What now?

Ring them first and talk it through, because the course may be better than it looks on paper. If you are certain, decline your place and use Clearing. Line up an alternative before you decline.

Can I defer and go next year instead?

That is a conversation with the university, not a UCAS button. Ask them directly whether they will hold a place, and get the answer in writing.

Is a year out going to count against me?

Scottish universities routinely admit students from college, from S6 and from the workforce. What they want to see is that the year was used. An HNC, a resit with a plan behind it, or relevant work all read better than a gap.

How long do I have before Clearing shuts?

In 2026, 19 October was the last date to add a Clearing choice and 21 October the last date for a decision. Most courses fill well before then. See our guide to Clearing in Scotland.

Should I withdraw my whole application?

Only if you are sure you are not going this year. If you have accepted an offer, you phone the university holding your place and ask them to withdraw you, or ask UCAS to do it. It is not something to do at 9am on results day in a bad mood.
